An enjoyable read of a classic Gothic tale

The Castle of Otranto is a classic gothic tale by Horace Walpole and a founding work of Gothic fiction and the precursor to such works as Bram Stoker’s Dracula. But the story itself is a compelling and interesting tale. It centers on seven characters: Manfred, the ruler of the house of Otranto, his son, Conrad, his daughter Matilda, Isabella who is to marry Conrad, her father Frederic who also has claims to rule, Farther Jerome, the head of the local church and a young man, Theodore, initially described as a peasant by who turns out to be Jerome’s son and with a claim of his own. The plot begins when Conrad dies prior to the wedding and Manfred decides to marry Isabella himself so that he can have sons to continue his family’s reign. She refuses and seeks refuge in the church, aided by Theodore. Manfred refuses to give up his quest as Frederic arrives to stake his own claim and save his daughter. The plot thickens as various ghostly figures appear and the inevitable tragic ending occurs.
I found this book to be entertaining and even fun. There is, for example, a humorous scene between Manfred and Isabella’s maid servant and the madcap manner in which Manfred tries to cajole the various characters to get his way would be reminiscent of a Marx Brothers comedy if we did not know better. In sum it is well worth reading this rather short work of some 100 pages that is enlightened by a variety of explanatory material.
