The Story of the Malakand Field Force (Winston Churchill Early Works Collection), by Winston Churchill

As a 22-year-old subaltern in the 4th Hussars stationed in Bangalore in 1897, Winston Churchill was an ambitious young soldier. Seeking military distinction, he talked his way onto the Malakand Field Force to battle restless frontier tribes after meeting the commander, Sir Bindon Blood, at a social engagement. There were no openings for junior officers—but Churchill convinced the commander to allow him to come along as a war correspondent. And thus a great career was born.

This book shows the determination and spirit that would later mature into the indomitable personality of Winston Churchill in his prime. While not as polished as his later work, it is still elegantly crafted—and shows a brash willingness to criticize military leaders, including Lord Kitchener himself. It is one of Churchill’s more rare works; until a new edition was published in 1990, it had been out of print in English since 1916.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sir Winston Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 “for his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values.”

Over a 64-year span, Churchill published over 40 books, many multi-volume definitive accounts of historical events to which he was a witness and participant. All are beautifully written and as accessible and relevant today as when first published.

During his fifty-year political career, Churchill served twice as Prime Minister in addition to other prominent positions—including President of the Board of Trade, First Lord of the Admiralty, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Home Secretary. In the 1930s, Churchill was one of the first to recognize the danger of the rising Nazi power in Germany and to campaign for rearmament in Britain. His leadership and inspired broadcasts and speeches during World War II helped strengthen British resistance to Adolf Hitler—and played an important part in the Allies’ eventual triumph.

One of the most inspiring wartime leaders of modern history, Churchill was also an orator, a historian, a journalist, and an artist. All of these aspects of Churchill are fully represented in this collection of his works.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Well before he began his political career, Winston Churchill was a war correspondent and a soldier in the British Army, starting in 1895. He saw action in conflicts such as the Second Boer War and the Mahdist War, as well as in World War I. His writings during this time are insightful eyewitness accounts of war—fascinating both for their historical significance and the insights they offer into Churchill as an author and a future world leader.

Embedded journalism by a (famous and literate) Lieutenant
By Peter Monks
"The Story of the Malakand Field Force" is an interesting read for a number of reasons. Churchill's story of the Malakand campaign provide an interesting case study of a military operation with limited objectives (even if not quite a COIN operation) in circumstances of significant interest today by a technologically advanced but relatively inflexible, immobile and significantly outnumbered western force. It is also an introduction to the young Winston Churchill, and readers expecting to read the views of a bigoted, blinkered reactionary may be somewhat surprised to find that even as a 22-year old Lieutenant Churchill was able draw some complex and nuanced conclusions from his experience - even if some of these conclusions (eg his advocacy of the usefulness of cavalry or the desirability of a policy of forward defence in the North-West Frontier) can be considered ill-founded. While his viewpoint is very much that of a junior officer embedded in a force for which he has much sympathy, and as a consequence could not be considered objective or even-handed, I must admit that his writing and powers of both observation and analysis are a damn sight better than mine ever was at the same age and rank!

Anyone with an interest in colonial warfare (particularly in the India/Pakistan/Afghanistan part of the world) or the young Winston Churchill will find this of interest and for this audience it is certainly good value. The lack of maps is however an irritant, and with the probably inaccurate translations and the passage of time Google Maps wasn't of much help in filling in the blanks ...

Written in true Churchillian style- very robust with a dry wit and yet a respect for his opponents of war. The personal viewpoint is valuable, as Churchill actually participated in the camapign of which he wrote. A good companion to this book his Churchill's autobiography of his earlt life, which delas (in part) with the Malakand Field force in much more detail.

Mapless?
By Dumasclub Man
This is Churchill's first book and it was an immediate bestseller as well as controversial. Although written over a hundred years ago, the book portrays the beligerant nature of the mountainous country in Pakistan now infested with Taliban fighters. Churchill's portrayal of certain high ranking generals exposes the idiocy of the British army in selecting people based on lineage rather than leadership. This caused quite a tremor in certain circles. Churchill was an unrepentant colonialist, throughout his life, who did not think very much of "natives," as he called them and his language and temperment shows through on the pages. But again we must understand that this book was written over a hundred years ago. Although this was his first book, Churchill's skill at writing is quite polished, without being pretensious in the least. The battle scenes are dramatically portrayed and one gets the feeling of desperation and the intensity of the siege of Malakand (the original title was called Siege of Malakand but was changed by the publisher because it was felt that natives could not besiege a crack British army of any size).

What ruins this Kindle edition is the lack of maps, which would have made the book far more interesting. This is a serious flaw. It does seem at times certain electronic publishers are far more interested in pumping out books than actually putting out quality merchandise. That said the formatting isn't bad but it did have some issues when it came to chapter breaks. As another reviewer stated it is often hard to see if the book has maps or is properly formatted. Amazon should do a better job of describing the contents of books and ensure that there are basic standards for formatting.
