About the Author

Professor Stephen Palmer PhD is an award winning psychologist. He is Founder Director of the Centre for Coaching and Centre for Stress Management, London. He is the UK's first Visiting Professor of Work Based Learning and Stress Management at the Institute for Work Based Learning, Middlesex University.

 

He has authored over 225 articles and 40 books on counselling, psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, coaching and coaching psychology, and stress management. He is UK Coordinating Editor of International Coaching Psychology Review, Executive Editor of Coaching: An International Journal of Theory, Research & Practice, and Consulting Editor of the International Journal of Health Promotion of Health Promotion & Education.

 

He is actively involved in a number of professional bodies. Currently he is Honorary President of the International Stress Management Association (UK); President of the International Society for Coaching Psychology; Founder Co-Chair of the London Branch of the British Association for Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapies; a Founder Director and Vice President of the Society of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy; a Director and Deputy Chair of the Association for Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy. He is a Former President and now Honorary Vice President of the Institute for Health Promotion & Education. He was the 1st Chair of the British Psychological Society Special Group in Coaching Psychology and was the 1st Honorary President of the Association for Coaching.

 

His interests include jazz, art and coastal walking.

Professor Robert Bor trained in the UK, South Africa and the USA. He is a Chartered Clinical, Counselling and Health Psychologist as well as a Fellow of the British Psychological Society. He is a UKCP Registered Family Therapist, having completed his specialist training at the Tavistock Clinic, London and a clinical member of the Institute of Family Therapy, London. He has a special interest in developing psychological support services for those affected by chronic or acute medical conditions, and especially those with cancer. He has published more than 150 articles and chapters in peer-review publications as well as 20 books on the psychological impact of illness and serves on the editorial board of numerous international journals. An exciting story of hard science fiction

As I was reading this novella, I kept telling myself that it was just the sort of science fiction book made for me. It contains, in fact, all the elements that I prefer.
First, it’s set in a near future characterised by sufficient elements of the present to make it recognisable and plausible. Since the first pages you are able to perceive such a sense of realism to believe that everything that is told could really happen in a few decades.
The credibility of the narrative is also accentuated by the accurate scientific and technological content. This is hard science fiction at its best. The author shows to be extremely prepared in the theme of astronautics and space exploration.
The plot is compelling. On the one hand, it shows us a future where space travel is made easier by the existence of a space elevator (the title refers to it). It’s a subject very dear to lovers of this sub-genre of science fiction, but also and especially to those who are interested in space exploration and revel in imagining what benefit such technology could bring to this field.
One of my favourite aspect is the image of a positive future, despite the presence of intrigues, conspiracies and betrayals. A future in which technology allows mankind to do great things.
Beside to this topic is that of the asteroid. Could it be a danger to Earth? Or just something interesting to study? And what if it concealed some wonderful mystery? And here the author plays his cards in a truly original way (I cannot go into detail because I risk falling into a spoiler).
Added to this is the problem of how to handle certain information with the public. Turnbull shows us the ambivalent reaction of people in front of the unknown, where the fight against fear and its consequences can be a major barrier to knowledge.
The worst but also the best (including heroism) of human nature are highlighted.
All these elements are skilfully woven into a story made by the characters, so well delineated so that they almost come to life in the pages. Excellent dialogue, often witty and amusing, breathtaking action scenes, and skill in putting together the scenes and interrupt them at the right time complete the packaging of this little pearl in the science fiction scene.
It’s definitely a great way to taste this author and I think that I will soon read his other books.

If you like hardcore SF with good characterization and a thoughtful plot, here's a story for you

Lakshmi “Andy” Andersen is a spaceship captain for Inter-Planet Shipping, Ltd in the early Twenty-Second Century. She’s called away from her vacation on an urgent matter: to investigate a large dangerous asteroid that is apparently on a collision course with Earth. She must ascend a space elevator (which is located near Quito, Ecuador and goes tens of thousands of miles into space) in order to reach her ship to embark on this important mission. That elevator is the “Ribbon to the Sky” mentioned in the title.

But Andy, her crew, and a group of research scientists soon find that things are not what they seem …

This yarn is an engrossing and fast moving page turner that will keep you involved through the last page. The characters are multidimensional and interesting in their own right. As an astrophysicist, I can positively say that all of the technology mentioned is not only scientifically possible, but probably will exist within the next one hundred years.

A fun way to pass a few hours, so don’t pass this one up. Science fiction in the tradition of Robert Heinlein, so if you’re not careful, you just might learn a few things while you read it.

This isn't one of Doug Turnbull's absolute best (keep in mind, that's kinda like comparing la Pieta with David... I'd be happy if MY best was 1/10th as good as Doug' "Not-His-Best"!!!). A good concept (classic in every way - that's good - this is NOT a knock!), with engaging characters (in the finest Heinlein-esque style) and an interesting mix of competing forces. All the ingredients are there for another instant Turnbull classic; but it just feels rushed... You know, the way a short story that you REALLY wish was a War and Peace-length novel feels rushed? I was left feeling like I wanted more - at every stage of the book. The old show biz saw notwithstanding, I do NOT like being left wanting MORE throughout a read... Anyway, give it a go, see what YOU think... I'll be waiting here, because I am interested in what other folks think/thought of the read... Cheers!

Classic Anglican piety

This book serves several functions. In it Lewis goes a bit deeper in theology than what you find in Mere Christianity and he also touches on explosive issues in mid-century Anglican theology.

He covers basic issues as man-made prayers, bodily posture, distractions and the problem of having non-images in the head while praying. He notes the dangers and possible value in some of these.

Some of the real theological gems are at the end. Should we pray to God for the saints? Like a good Anglican, Lewis doesn't tell you what you *should* do. But he has some interesting points: most of the people I love are already dead? Am I forbidden to mention them to God because they are dead? And while it is true that we can't pray others into heaven from hell, because it is already fixed, Lewis points out that if we apply that same reason to prayer because of predestination, we are in the same bind. Why pray, since it is already fixed in eternity?

Lewis rejects the crude literal version of purgatory and where earlier Romish divines like More went astray. While I agree with Lewis that there are post-death moments which aren't quite heaven or hell, I don't think his reasons for Purgatory--however he defines it--are compelling.

He ends on an outstanding discussion of the Resurrection of the body and the nature of matter and sensory experience.

LEWIS'S DETAILED (AND SOMETIMES SURPRISING!) MEDITATIONS ON PRAYER

Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) was a novelist, academic, medievalist, lay theologian, and Christian apologist who held academic positions at both Oxford University and Cambridge University. He wrote many other books, such as Mere Christianity, Miracles, Problem of Pain, The Screwtape Letters, A Grief Observed, The World's Last Night, The Abolition of Man, The Great Divorce, God in the Dock, Christian Reflections, etc.

"Malcolm" was a fictional creation of Lewis; "Malcolm" is a convert, who needs instruction on prayer (although Lewis certainly disclaims any "expertise" in the subject). This book was first published (posthumously) in 1964.

Lewis writes, "Every war, every famine or plague, almost every death-bed, is the monument to a petition that was not granted. At this very moment thousands of people in this one island are facing... the very thing against which they have prayed night and day, pouring out their whole soul in prayer, and, as they thought, with faith. They have sought and not found. They have knocked and it has not been opened. 'That which they greatly feared has come upon them.'" [Job 3:25]

He states, "Enlightened people want to get rid of this magical element in favour of what they would call the 'spiritual' element. But the spiritual, conceived as something thus antithetical to 'magical,' seems to become merely the psychological or ethical. And neither that by itself, nor the magical by itself, is a religion. I am not going to lay down rules as to the share---quantitatively considered---which the magical should have in anyone's religious life. Individual differences may be permissible. What I insist on is that it can never be reduced to zero. If it is, what remains is only morality, or culture, or philosophy." (Pg. 106)

He admits, "Of course I pray for the dead. The action is so spontaneous, so all but inevitable, that only the most compulsive theological case against it would deter men... At our age the majority of those we love best are dead. What sort of intercourse with God would I have if what I love best were unmentionable to Him? On the traditional Protestant view, all the dead are damned or saved... God has already done all for them... But don't we believe that God has already done and is already doing all that He can for the living? What more should we ask? Yet we are told to ask." (Pg. 109)

He also reveals, "I believe in Purgatory... Religion has reclaimed Purgatory. Our souls DEMAND Purgatory, don't they?... I assume that the process of purification will normally involve suffering...." (Pg. 109-110)

He also acknowledges, "let's now at any rate come clean. Prayer IS irksome. An excuse to omit it is never unwelcome. When it is over, this casts a feeling of relief and holiday over the rest of the day. We are reluctant to begin. We are delighted to finish. While we are at prayer, but not while we are reading a novel or solving a cross-word puzzle, any trifle is enough to distract us." (Pg. 113-114)

This book, while not one of Lewis's more "popular" ones, nevertheless contains some intriguing thoughts, and is well worth careful reading for any Christians studying prayer, as well as fans of Lewis's other works.

Today we conquered "Victory Tower." Talk aboutawesome! The Drill Sergeants taught us how to rappel down a slanted wall thatwas twelve-foot tall. Just when we thought that things were finally easing up abit, they had us rappel down a vertical wall that was two-hundred-foot tall! Ofcourse, the Drill Sergeants had to have a little fun with us first. While theywere giving us a demonstration, one of the Drill Sergeants threw a dummy offthe side of the tower. At first we thought that it was a real person, andwatched in horror as the dummy landed face-first on the ground.
   "That'swhat happens if you fail to strap yourself in properly," one of the DrillSergeants yelled from the top of the wall. "This time it was only a dummy. Afew years ago a young troop was up here, fell off and died. Let's not let thathappen today. Hooah?"
   We all letout a thunderous, "Hooah!"
   When it wasmy turn to climb up to the top of the tower, my knees were shaking so bad Ididn't think I could do it. But I forced myself to climb to the top. And once Igot up there, and realized how high up I was, the only thing I could thinkabout was getting this over with.
   The DrillSergeant strapped me into the harness, showed me how to handle the rope, andthen told me to turn around and rappel down the wall.
   "This isthe only way down," he told me. "Just don't think about it."
   I did whatthe Drill Sergeants had taught me, and in no time I had rappelled to the bottomof the wall. It turned out to be rather fun! And it was a good thing that I enjoyedit so much, because I ended up doing it three more times!

I am a military brat that has lived around bases all my life. I even now live around one of the biggest Army bases out there. My family all works on this base and we have a lot of military friends.

When I was 19 I thought about joining the Air Force. One of the reasons I didn't was because I had this big fear of what happened during Basic Training. No one really talked about it and what the movies showed freaked me out. That being said I have always been the curious one on what happens during that time. Now we have a SGT in the Army that has published his Basic Training Journal so we can all know first hand what he went through.

I read this book in a matter of hours. I didn't want to put it down because I honestly had to know what happened during this time. This book is very informative. It is a journal so don't expect it to read like a normal book. The Author of this Journal gave us a inside look at what he experienced during his time at Basic Training. Something most soldiers or at least none that I have met talk about even when asked. You get to learn some of the Military talk that you sometimes hear on TV such as "being smoked" or "BCG's" (Birth control glasses). You see what they went through to learn what they know and to become the soldiers that some of us see everyday.

Being a soldier is not a simple thing to become. You must go through some hard days before you get that reward of calling yourself a "Soilder". During the Authors time he experienced a lot of things from the normal training they go through to people going "AWOL", people dropping out, and people threatening some crazy stuff. These soldiers go through a lot and this book shows that not all make it to the other side.

"Remember: This is not a sprint, it's a marathon."

I honestly enjoyed this book. I loved learning about the things I always wanted to know. I look at Soldiers differently now. They have to learn to be where they are now. It's not a simple task and is one that everyone earns. They have to remember so many things and have to pass PT tests and get themselves in shape. They also have to learn how to shoot a gun and how to take care of it. The list of what these Soldiers has to learn seems to be endless. Just because you make it to the last day of Basic Training does not mean you will graduate and become the Soldier everyone worked towards. I would love for a Journal about AIT or even one of the first year of a soldier.

Excellent read!

I absolutely love this book! It gives you a small glimpse into the making of a US Soldier. I only wish the author wrote even more while he was in BCT but I understand the limit. Maybe one day he will extend the book and write about his time over seas.

Easy and not so easy read.

As a writer, and a consumer of massive amounts of written word. I appreciate a book that is well thought out, and is written in such a way that is easy to read. Although the military at the basic level is not rocket science, it is refreshing to read a book that is . . . well Basic. Mr. Harmon hits all the right notes.

Now the uneasy part. Harmon also brings the very uncomfortable parts along with him. These are the parts that we civilians don't know about, or don't want to know. He brings us along and we see what his life is truly like. He exposes the other twenty-three hour and fifty-eight minutes of the day that we got in a two minute sound bite wedged between the cat rescue and the rising unemployment on the six-o'clock news.

I won't thank Mr. Harmon for the images that my mind recalls.

But I will thank him and all else that serve for making it a more comfortable bed for me to dream in at night.

Now, If only books like this could be required reading for those in Congress.
