The American West from the pen of someone who was there.

As an avid fan of TV series as a boy, I was curious to read the novel.
As I expected from a book published in 1902, The Virginian is a good, clean read, without the obligatory profanity, innuendo, and pornography that is currently prevalent.
The Heraklion Edition follows Kindle conventions. It is well formatted and missing the typographical errors that all too often plagues the conversions of public domain novels into ebooks.
Owen Wister spent several summers in the American west. The Virginian is regarded as the first western novel, paving the way for authors such as Zane Grey and Louis L’Amour.
Wister’s novel was wildly popular. It was reprinted 14 times in 8 months. It has been made into a movie 5 times. The TV version is the 3rd longest running TV western with 247 episodes (9 years).
I truly enjoyed this look into the past. Reading fiction of a historic period, from someone who was actually there, is always stimulating to me.

Holds up well today - A terrific read set in the Old West

My favorite books are Pride and Prejudice and Memoirs of a Geisha. Those deserve five stars, hands down. This one deserves four and a half which is not an option, obviously. Wister is marvelously descriptive and laugh-out-loud funny, even all of these years later. I won't ever forget the chicken story, for one thing, but I don't want to give away any spoilers. I enjoyed The Virginian as much as I enjoyed Lonesome Dove, but I think it came to its conclusion just a bit better than McMurty's masterpiece. If you have any inkling at all to read the original western novel, jump right in. You won't regret it.

A Classic Western

OW wrote one of the top ten western of the 19th century. The Virginian even made it to the movies and a long run television western series. I think a classical comment was made during the movie we should remember. "Smile when you call me that!"
This is an excellent novel of the genre.....ER
