Wonderful zombie survival handbook that won't strain your ability to suspend disbelief

I have been getting into the TV shower The Walking Dead lately and in discussing the show with my nephew I expressed my disappointment that the zombies really test my suspension of disbelief. My biggest criticism the zombies are decomposing, eventually all their soft tissue should decay to the point where it can no longer connect the bodies anymore, yet they just keep right on going (just one example). My nephew told me about this book and I bought it on Kindle that very night.
This is a wonderfully thoughtful manual. The science of how zombies come to be is explained in great and believable detail. The author (son of actor Mel Brooks) creates a universe where zombies are simply real and gives realistic instructions on how to protect yourself in a variety of situations. His in depth comparison of various weaponry, ranging from fire arms, to knives, to crow bars, is too detailed and vast for my taste, but probably essential information in the event of a zombie apocalypse. His illustrations can be crude and basic, but also hilarious. And his accounts of documented zombie attacks are genius and completely believable. I truly feel I have a good understanding of what is needed if the zombie problem gets out of hand.

99% Good advice for a fictional zombie apocalypse

Amazing work of fiction. Well written and some solid advice for the sort of zombie apocalypse that could never happen. If this book dealt with zombies that are virus-based (I.E. Zombieland, Resident Evil)it would have been far more useful. As there are far more ways to alter the brain of a living human being to be aggressive, uncoordinated and feel no pain than there are ways to reanimate the dead.
Also, The section on what primary firearm to choose is somewhat lacking. Operating on a stereotype and outdated information than research. The issue in Vietnam that caused the rifle to malfunction so often was attributed to the lot of ammo that they were using at the time. Not the gun its self. Once they recalled all the bad ammo, the gun's performance and reliability improved ten-fold. As it is the standard assault weapon of US military soldiers and law enforcement alike, ammo for the m16 will be far more plentiful and easier to obtain than AK-47 ammo. The AR is lighter and depending on what parts are used to build it, just as useful in melee as the AK. But due to the direct gas impingement system it uses to cycle the bolt, the gun runs hotter and gets dirtier faster. Both of these factors reduce weapon reliability somewhat, but are easily rectified by regularly caring for your weapon. The AK's gas piston system allow for a cooler, cleaner-running gun for longer periods of sustained fire, but the system is more complex, has more moving parts, more points of failure and will fail just as easily as any other gun if not properly cared for. It is also heavier because of the extra parts involved in the gas piston system. Ammo for the AK will be less plentiful, but it is dirt cheap, and designed to be effective at longer range than AR-15 ammo. The one downside is, unlike M16 ammo which fragments and does significant internal damage to a target on impact, AK47 ammo will penetrate and leave a comparatively small wound channel. Which will be less effective against any kind of zombie due to the fact that they will either only be vulnerable to total destruction of the brain stem, or so hopped up on their own body chemicals that they will shrug off anything that doesn't do catastrophic damage to the internal organs.
In my opinion, an AK47 would be best for a well fortified defense bunker. Whereas an M16 would be best suited to survival on the move.

A seminal and classic book

This well-crafted and insightful work is a delight to read. Packed with helpful survival hints for dealing with Level 1 to 3 zombie infestations. Sadly however the author presents compelling evidence in support of his sobering conclusion that human survival is only marginally probable in the case of a Level 4 global zombie pandemic.
The book's contents are logically arranged and feature a contextual background, a detailed review of tactics and strategies to combat various threat levels as well as an informative chronological set of zombie outbreak case histories. Most interesting to this reviewer was the practical approach adopted by a determined Roman commander based in North Britain facing a mass zombie horde just on 2,000 years ago: channel, decapitate, burn and instantly euthenize one's own wounded.
One proviso I have to mention is that the book is premised on the existence of only one type of premordial non-evolving zombie. For example, the author does not acknowledge the risks associated with latter-day perverted science such as the well documented Green Flu research programme involving genetic modification of various strains of rabies virus and which many believe pose a greater and more immediate prejudice to human societies.
