As you might expect of the work of one of the founders of Chicago's famed Second City comedy troupe, Bernard Sahlins' new translation of Beaumarchais' classic eighteenth-century farce is considerably looser and more accessible than other versions currently in print. Chuckling through the printed version of the play, you can see its appeal for an audience more interested in entertainment than in the play's importance as an influence on French theater and, via Mozart's famous musical adaptation, on the history of opera. Yet Sahlins' "speakable" version of the play sacrifices little of its spirit or of the pointed class distinctions of the French court of its time. Nor does Sahlins, in making the original play palatable to a contemporary audience, denature Beaumarchais' two great comic creations--the wily, wise valet Figaro and his equally wily, beautiful wife-to-be Suzanne remain living, breathing characters, as amusing and likable to us today as they were two centuries ago. I bought this used as the title says and I did expect it to come looking a mess. But other than some scrapping on the binding and stiffness and yellowing on the pages it is perfect. No writing or highlighting and the printing isnt blochy like I have heard others say. I am pleased with this especially since I bought it for school.

A surprisingly good gift for an intermittently religious teenager.

Although I'm a practicing Catholic, I struggled to purchase something so religious and personal for my teenage step-son for his Confirmation. We had this delivered to us so that we could write a personal note on the inside page.

My Step-son was amazingly receptive! He's discussed a few of the prayers/teachings in phone/skype/facetime calls. Our favorite was the prayer that discussed self-respect and self-worth, which was very appropriate for a teenager who's having a tough time.

Should be titled, "The Book of Innumerable/Bad Analogies"

This book is comprised of one silly analogy after another until you just want to scream! I'm not really sure if is author has a good understanding of much of anything after reading this offering. He obviously isn't a fisherman when he says (paraphrasing here) you wouldn't try to catch a fish by using another fish as bait. Oh, really? Ever hear of "bait fish"? He obviously isn't well versed in firefighting techniques either when he states in another analogy, (paraphrasing again) you wouldn't consider using fire to fight a fire, you need water for that task, not additional fire. Wow, I cannot emphasize enough how glad I am that he's not in charge of putting out forest fires in my neck of the woods.

Look, as a cheerleading, motivational, idea-inspiring medium, this one just doesn't cut it. The author would do better publishing a list of his main ideas while removing most everything else. Perhaps he should take his own advice about removing distractions from the songwriting effort and apply it to his book writing. When the overuse of analogies interferes with the learning process, the analogies then become a distraction which destroy the intent of the book. I am left pondering the question, why bother with this one??? It's like picking through a load of BS, searching for a diamond in the rough...perhaps an exercise in diminishing returns. Sorry, but I just couldn't resist throwing in a bad analogy of my own. Kind of like fighting fire with fire don't you think?

Honestly, this book was ruined by the litany of poorly thought out analogies which pepper its pages. Additionally, the lack of information concerning this author's qualifications as a songwriter, guitarist or musician also detract from this book's credibility. Most of the message he was trying to get across got lost in the bad-analogy shuffle.

Sorry, but in good conscience, the best I can rate this one is 1 1/2 stars.

Fascinating... and scary

"Ten Days in a Mad-House" is a fascinating exposé of an insane asylum in New York City in the late 19th century. Nellie Bly (the pen name for female journalist Elizabeth Jane Cochran), takes an assignment from the New York World newspaper to go undercover into the notorious Blackwell's Island Insane Asylum and write about it. She easily succeeds in convincing a judge and a doctor that she is insane, and a few hours later, she's become an inmate in the asylum. The conditions inside are abominable, with the female inmates being abused by the staff members, the food is inedible, and most of the inmates are freezing in the cold, drafty wards. It becomes obvious to Ms. Bly that once admitted to the hospital, few inmates will ever leave, even the ones who are perfectly sane. The hospital is simply a convenient dumping ground for misfits and others who don't fit neatly into society. Even the women who were genuinely insane received no treatment, only abuse and cruelty from the doctors and nurses on the hospital staff.

The story reminded me of Angelina Jolie's character in the movie "The Changeling," where she is sent to an insane asylum by the police to keep her from exposing their ineptitude and corruption. It's a scary, depressing time for Ms. Bly, even knowing that she will be rescued in a few days.

As a result of Ms. Bly's exposé, a grand jury required the city to invest a substantial amount of money in improving conditions on Blackwell's Island.

The Kindle edition also includes two shorter undercover articles by Nellie Bly. It's a short book that most readers will finish in a couple of hours, but it's well worth the time for an absorbing look into the state of mental health treatment in an earlier era.

What a story!

Nellie Bly, a reporter, feigned madness in order to gain admission to an asylum. It didn't take too much effort for her to be diagnosed as insane, and taken away. In the asylum, she acted normally again, but nobody seemed to notice. If she had not been a reporter, she probably would have been stuck there forever.
Her writing is clear, intelligent, humorous, and compassionate. Some of the stories of the asylum residents are heartbreaking, and the conditions sound horrendous.
I plan to read more of her writing.

A hero, regardless of the era

Fascinating. I was looking for something completely unrelated when I ran across this eBook and read it in a day.

This story is a non-fiction account of reporter Nellie Bly's purposeful incarceration in 1887 in the Women's Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell's Island. Going under an assumed identity, she spent ten days observing the conditions the women were subjected to -- horrid food, a complete absence of anything to do, no effort at rehabilitation, and frigid conditions, to name just a few. After leaving the institution ten days later, her report caused a Grand Jury to convene, and the state awarded a million-dollar increase in funding to the budget of the Department of Corrections and Charities.

What's frightening about the book is the ease in which Nellie Bly got herself committed. All she had to do was act as if she didn't know who she was, cause discomfort among the women in the boarding house she checked into, and that was it. Insane asylums of that day were little more than a dumping ground for penniless trouble cases and people who were essentially disposable. Many sane people were thrown into these facilities, but the conditions were so horrible that if they weren't insane when they entered, they would shortly be so.

Disregarding the date and her sex, Nellie Bly is a hero. Considering the date and her sex, she was a saint.
