Delicious novel

I picked this up at a book sale. I'd never heard of Emily Carr. Now I can't get enough of her art and her writing - have ordered her complete writings and a book on her art. Just take a look at her paintings on Pinterest or Google Images. This novel is beautifully written and provides a fascinating portrait of this inspired, determined woman. I think Vreeland did a marvelous job of imitating the language and perspective of Carr. Highly recommended.

Yet another book about a woman who is ahead of her time, isn't understood by the people around her, a free spirit in a world of conformists, blah, blah, blah. Truly sappy dialogue, characters you'd avoid at all cost in real life. For a really well-written book on this theme, read Jane Smiley's "The Greenlanders."

Not an easy read, but certainly a powerful and most unforgettable one....

I can certainly understand why this book won the Pulitzer prize. Detailing the day-to-day activities of Kim Jong Il's "patriarchy" from the point of view of it's poorest citizens, the story is incredibly tragic and extremely heartbreaking, nevertheless one that must be told. The theme of man's inhumanity to man runs through out… It must've placed the writer in grave danger to go to North Korea to do research for the book. But for the grace of God not to be born a citizen of the Republic of North Korea; I, for one, will never again take for granted the fact that I live in America.

It's very difficult to give feedback on this novel. And a difficult book to read. Propaganda, torture, lies, and fear are rampant. The people of N. Korea are depicted as having no value except where they can be used for labor and infliction of pain. Disappearances of entire families and friends are common, and people have no real names; if this is at all true, it is devastating to read. I had a hard time getting through it, but the writer is very gifted.
Also, I am surprised that this three year old novel had only one reader review--which didn't seem to correlate with this book!!
I often look to readers for their opinions before diving into a book, so what's up???

Full of twists. Everytime I thought I knew what was going to happen next, something else happened. And this book stimulated my intrest in North Korea, its history and its geography. Some in my book group thought it was too extreme, too tongue in cheek, too outrageous, hyperbolic, but I think it speaks to the extremes that the North Korean people live in, and at the same time the story is very personal. I felt I was with the main character Jun Do every step of the way. I'd give it 5 stars but that it seemed a few chapters too long, and the fact that others didn't enjoy it as much as I did tells me it isn't an easy read for some.

This seventh volume covers the period from 1809-1810, after a disastrous raid into French held Holland, the British government took the momentous decision to use all their power to the strike at Napoleon at what was his weakest point, Portugal and Spain. After the British foray into Spain in 1809 culminating the bloody victory at the battle of Talavera, the British troops retreated into Portugal before the overwhelming French numbers. Inflicting a punishing check to the French invasion force under Masséna at Bussaco, the British army marched to the massive and impenetrable lines of Torres Vedras close to Lisbon. Sir John recounts the movements and actions with his customary style, attention to detail and vivid lucid style.

Doesn't add to its story, but still an excellent end to the series

The final issue in the American Dreams storyline (at least, in terms of the comics) concludes the story with a whimper rather than a bang, deliberately leaving several threads open for DLC to cover, and ending Riley and Ellie’s adventure on a grim, dour note. After finally finding the Fireflies, as well as their leader, Maureen, the two girls witness a confrontation with a gang of smugglers, and get a sour look at the realities of the Fireflies. There’s no sympathy to be found behind their lines, although Maureen does claim to be looking out for Ellie at the behest of her dead mother.

The confrontation with Maureen is tense and well-paced, and the preceding action is brutal, though not overly gory. The dialogue is harsh and maintains a realistic tone, which makes for a nice flow from one dialogue bubble to another, and the action moves with a similar fluidity. It’s genuinely affecting to watch Riley’s idealistic view of the Fireflies come crashing down into tiny pieces, and equally gratifying to see Ellie defend her. Their bond is touching and supportive, the kind of partnership and friendship that you don’t often get to see between two girls (at least, not in this context), and I’m so grateful for it here.

Intersting Build Up

This was an interesting read. Don't expect the deep story you get from the game but its a very well done build up to it. It seemed to focus more on what Ellie and her friend Riley want out of life. I guess is why the series is called American Dreams. Of course it's dark and realistic in nature and pokes at certain personal values kind of like the game does. Over all it's not epic but a pretty good read.
